Getting Organized

The last couple of days, I’ve been working on some infrastructure - programs to help me get and stay organized. Right now the biggest need is a way to track what sites I can promote, and what niches they’re in. This might sound easy (I do have unified stats to track sponsors) but it’s actually very hard. For example, did you know that TopBucks has a Cheerleader site I could be promoting? (I didn’t) or that Dollar Machine has midgets? Huh.

This started when I began trying to submit more galleries to the new Beta Brigade TGP - I saw several categories that were empty (or nearly so) and I tried to figure out if I had any galleries that would fit them. What I quickly found out was that, after only three months, I had no idea WHAT I had. And that wasn’t going to fly. I also realized I didn’t know which checks I hadn’t received yet - so off I went to create a spreadsheet where I could log payouts. (Turns out I’m still waiting for a Sapphic Cash check or two - if I don’t see one by the end of the month, I’ll drop them a note.)

The lesson here for new webmasters is, it’s easy to get buried in data. And data doesn’t become information (and start making you money) until you start analyzing and organizing it! That can be as simple as writing it down, or building a spreadsheet - or if you’re a couple hardcore PHP coders like Lucky and I, it may become a full fledged web application :) It just depends. The important thing is to figure out what you need to track, and then develop a process to track it!

And no, I haven’t forgotten about my promised article on ’site portfolio management’ - but until I actually finish reviewing mine, I don’t want to post it! So keep checking back for more information :) Later!
