Comment spam and you

I’m already getting comment spam. Then again, maybe it’s just that the spam-bots are so much more pervasive than they used to be. Blogs have proven to be a great way to get indexed, and the most recent studies show that a substantial number of blogs are abandoned every day - some with only one entry! If the owner didn’t take the time to protect themselves from comment spam, then there are literally thousands of backlink opportunities out there.

And whenever there’s an opportunity, someone is going to try and take advantage of it.

Comment spambots are not my gig, but they affect all of us - adult bloggers and mainstream alike. It’s hard to stay ahead of the hundreds (or sometimes thousands) of comment spam that can appear daily. Wordpress has more plugins than you can shake a stick at for fighting the rising tide of comment spam: some adult bloggers even disable comments entirely. I personally think that comments are important on a blog, to build trust and eventually encourage a purchasing decision from the reader. If visitors trust your blog, they will consider you a trusted source and may return to you time and again, even if they leave the first sponsor you promoted!

I strongly believe in the power of social networking, and that a blog owner who harnesses it correctly can achieve great things. Comments, social bookmarking and post carnivals all harness that power - and lead directly to profits.
